The Southern Illinois Christian Conference was organized in 1833. They held a meeting at Union Hill Christian Church October 24, 1896 for the purpose of incorporating. They also held a special meeting at Mount Carbon Christian church December 19, 1936 for the purpose of becoming a religious corporation. This incorporation was filed March 18th, 1937. In 1927, E.M. Williams compiled and wrote about how the conference started in Biblical Dialogues in the Christian Record (PDF Document). It is in this writing that E.M. Williams references What of the Christians? A statement of the Principles and Characteristics of the Christians (PDF Document) written by Rev. J. Alex Clapp in 1891. |

Principles of the Christian Church |
- Accept no other name, only Christian.
- The Holy Bible the only rule of faith. In any discussions or disputes concerning Biblical truths the Old King James Version is the final authority.
- Christ the head of the Church.
- Steadfastly and truly believe as the Scriptures teach that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
- We believe in regeneration and born again. -John 3:7.
- And if an individual fails to hold faithful to the end, he be cast into outer darkness. Matthew 25:14-30; Matthew 12:43-45; Luke 11:24-26.
- We believe water baptism is a commandment, and should receive it but not essential to spiritual baptism. Matthew 28:19-20; Luke 23:43.
- We receive persons from any religion incorporated denomination, with like beliefs as the So. Ill. Christian Conference, by letter or by Christian character.
- We believe in open communion.

Covenant of the Christian Church |
Thankful for God's everlasting mercy, and for His great gift of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord, we covenant and agree together to seek, to know, and to do His Holy will and to promote, so far as in us lies, the triumph of our Savior's Kingdom over a wicked world. Heartedly, believing that the Holy Scriptures were given by inspiration of God and that they are profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and instruction in righteousness, and also that Christian Freedom requires that they be interpreted by individual judgement, we covenant together to accept Christian and worthy of our fellowship all who devotedly love the Lord Jesus Christ and sustain a life of vital Christian Piety as taught in the Word of God. Anxiously desiring that all differences which separate Christ's people may be removed, and that they may be one Flock and one Shepherd. We covenant together to lay aside all distinctive party names; and taking our title from the Great Head of the Church, to be known simply and only as Christians. And furthermore, realizing that the success of each church depends on the consecration of its individual membership, we covenant together to attend the services of the Church, contribute according to out means for its support, to labor together to maintain peace and harmony, and, so far as possible, in every way to promote its temporal and spiritual welfare; looking for our reward to the peace of God which surpasseth all understanding, and to the crown of rejoicing laid up for all who love Christ's appearing. |
